Born on the 9th of January, MC weighed just 286 grams when she arrived at the Napier Kiwi Crèche in early February. Like all young kiwi at the crèche, she was carefully raised in a predator-free environment designed to help her grow strong and healthy.
Her daily meals were a nutritious blend crafted by expert kiwi handlers – mimicked what she would naturally find in the wild. And to keep the local sparrows and mynas from sneaking a snack, her food was served in a special box that only opens after dark.
By the time MC graduated from the crèche on May 7th, she had grown to an impressive 1034 grams. That’s nearly four times her arrival weight!
After her graduation, MC was released into Maungataniwha, a sprawling native forest in eastern Hawke’s Bay.
This special area is part of a strong predator control programme, giving her the best possible start in the wild.
With her natural instincts sharpened and her health thriving, MC is now exploring her new home and helping to keep the future of kiwi in the wild alive.
Supporting kiwi conservation is part of our commitment to protecting the native bird of Aotearoa. Every chick like MC that grows up strong and safe means more hope for the future of the Kiwi. The Moving Company are honoured to be part of her journey.
