This Easter, Kiwis can take part in The Whittaker’s Big Egg Hunt – the first event of its kind Down Under which showcases giant eggs designed by top New Zealand artists all in support of Starship.
New Zealand’s leading artists and designers have turned giant eggs into unique masterpieces. The Moving Company is the official partner chosen to carefully deliver and hide 100 eggs, along with the team of volunteers from Starship, throughout Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch in historic, landmark and public spaces where you will be able to join the hunt and go into the draw to win the ultimate prize – a unique 340g 18ct Gold Whittaker’s Slab, which has been made by Partridge Jewellers.
The Whittaker’s Big Egg Hunt aims to raise funds for the Starship Foundation, a charity that supports the national children’s hospital to provide world-leading care for almost 120,000 patient visits each year.
As part of the partnership with Starship, Whittaker’s is donating at least $150,000 to Starship through specially marked products in participating stores by donating 10 cents from every iconic 50g Peanut Slab, 20 cents from every pack of its top selling Fairtrade Creamy Milk block and 20 cents from its Creamy Milk Easter Mini Slabs sold throughout the hunt.
Starship will also raise funds by auctioning off all 100 giant eggs – with 80 to be auctioned on Trade Me and the other 20 to be sold at a gala event in April.

Life x volume waiting by David McCracken

David McCracken began sculpting in his teens, mostly figurative work carved in wood. Returning to Auckland in his early 20s he worked in a variety of jobs, including boat building and construction. He gained skills using fibre, and later steel fabrication and welding.
In 2000, he had his first solo exhibition, ‘Fabrications’, at the McPherson Gallery and exhibited at the Beecroft outdoor sculpture show, marking the beginning of a series of floating works. In 2001, he was shortlisted for the Wallace Awards and had a second show ‘H2O2’ at McPherson Gallery as well as some private commissions. Work slowed for a spell after the birth of his third child in 2002, but in 2003 he increased production and is now sculpting full-time.
McCracken has exhibited at many outdoor exhibitions, including three Sculpture in the Gulfs, winning the People’s Choice award in 2005, and Shapeshifter exhibitions. He has been shortlisted for the Wallace Art Awards three times, being an award finalist twice.

Bird Spotting by Hannah Jensen

A multidisciplinary artist most well-known for her carved work, Hannah Jensen graduated from Auckland University of Technology in 2004 with a Bachelor of Visual Arts majoring in printmaking, and transferred her skills to the painted medium in her postgraduate practice, developing a unique stylistic approach. Jensen achieves the specific effect of her work by applying layers of paint to board before employing printmaking techniques such as intaglio, etching and carving to create thematic content. The results are detailed images rendered in negative relief that emphasises the texture and tonal variations between paint colours in a topographical manner. In 2004, Jensen was nominated for a Mazda Emerging Artist award; in 2009, she was a finalist in the WOW World of Wearable Arts competition; and in 2012, she was one of four artists selected to present site-specific installation work at the prestigious New Zealand Fashion Week. Jensen exhibits regularly in solo and group shows, both throughout New Zealand and overseas, and produces commissioned work for local and international clients from her Auckland studio.
